How do I start networking?
I have not done any networking, but want to start. How do I go about it? What should I do? I don’t want to be seen as boasting.
First of all think of networking as being for the good of the business. It is not about selling something to someone who does not want it but about building a mutual relationship. Try to keep in mind the question “ Is there something I can do to help this person?”
Plan your networking. Create a list of possible organisations that have networking events, for example, Chambers of Commerce, Business Link, Local Universities, Trade associations. There are also organisations such as BNI that run networking events. Talk to friends about which ones work for them. Visit a few and decide which one is right for you at the moment. Make a list of your strengths. Develop a 60 second commercial about your business. Make sure you have plenty of business cards (I have lost count of the number of events I have been to where people don’t bring business cards.) Always follow up. Be patient. Networking is a long-term activity you may not see results overnight. Networking puts you in a position to get in front of customers that under normal circumstances would not happen. Used wisely and over time networking can be a powerful part of your marketing activity.
