PR isn't working. I never seem able to get my press releases published. Any ideas why?
Put yourself in the journalists place is the story you have sent news or just an advert?
Think how the journalist might react. The crucial test is will they shrug their shoulders and say “so what”
Press releases should not begin “ we are proud to announce” A good strong headline that catches attention is vital.
The first paragraph must make the journalist want to read it. It should convey what the story is about. Aim to include the “WHO, WHAT, WHY, WHERE, WHEN” For local papers the local angle is important make sure it is in the first paragraph. Make sure you have included the contact name and phone number for further information.
Timing is important find out when the copy deadlines is. Ring up and ask. For example a weekly paper comes out on a Friday it is probably printed on a Thursday and should be contacted no later than Tuesday afternoon.
Telephoning a journalist is also a good idea. Ring to introduce yourself. Ask them whether the story you have in mind is of interest before you send it. Ask for their help, explain you are new to press relations and if anything can be improved. Resist the temptation to say what a good story it is, keep the conversation short and don’t hound the journalist.
