I own and manage a supermarket that has been in our family for generations.
We are based in a market town that so far has not attracted the big supermarket chains. Now all that is likely to change as planning permission has been granted for one of them to build a superstore. What advice do you have for me?
First of all take a long hard look at your store as if you have never seen it before and were a customer. Would it attract you? What repairs are needed? What needs a coat of paint? Your aim must be to project a warm friendly atmosphere.
Now take a look at what products you are selling and see if you can find some unusual items that are not stocked by the supermarkets. See if there are any local suppliers you can buy from.
Your objective should be to generate more people visiting and purchasing in your supermarket so consider some of the following promotional ideas:
- Give a free gift with every purchase of over X£s, for example tea bags, toilet rolls. - Create a cheese lovers club (or coffee or wine) Offer a cheese of the week. Offer a bottle of wine every week for the next 52 weeks for an advanced payment now. This could also develop into a wine tasting event and also a newsletter about wine. Do remember to talk to your supplier for help with this everything from a wine expert to a contribution towards the costs of the event. - Join up with a local butcher or baker to offer samples of their products. Work together to offer your customers benefits from both shops. - Develop a newsletter for local residents with recipes hints and tips etc. - Offer a telephone ordering service or fax order service. Customers can then either arrange a convenient time for them to pick up their shopping or arrange a delivery time. Over time this will enable you to build a list of customers and make them special offers that are relevant to them.
